Three years since her debut album, Shea Butter Baby, the Dreamville songstress, Ari Lennox has returned with an EP release entitled, Away Message.

Next week, Lennox will follow Shea Butter Baby with her long-awaited sophomore LP Age/sex/location, and she shared the early single “Hoodie” a few weeks ago. It’s a little unconventional to release an EP right before an album, but Ari Lennox’s instincts haven’t led her wrong yet.

The clear focal point of Away Message is “Queen Space,” a duet with fellow young R&B titan Summer Walker that’ll also appear on Age/sex/location. But all the tracks on Away Message sound album-ready. From beginning to end, Away Message takes listeners on a rollercoaster ride of feelings and emotions from a real, honest place. She hasn’t indicated if these five songs will join “Pressure” and “Hoodie” on age/sex/location or if Away Message is a standalone project of extras that didn’t make the album’s 12-song tracklist. Whatever the case may be, we are enjoying this bounty from Ari Lennox. If these incredible tracks just so happen to be the songs that didn’t make the cut, then we can’t wait to hear what does.

Rating: 9/10
